What to say in your first podcast episode

There are a million things that you can include in your introductory podcast, and in this article we’re going to cover exactly what (and why!) you should include in your first podcast episode.

First, we need to look into how to structure it, and then we’ll delve into the actual contents of it.

(Did you know that I have a podcast? You can listen to it here)

How to structure your intro episode

  1. Address your audience, welcome them to the show

  2. Introduce yourself as the host of the show

    1. Include your name.

    2. Include personal information that provides some background (Are you a specialist in senior living looking to educate the population about the senior maze? Or are you a true crime enthusiast who listens to endless hours of My Favorite Murder, and now want to discuss crimes with other fans?).

  3. Mention what inspired you to start your podcast

    1. In this section you should share your WHY.

    2. Don’t be afraid to get close and personal - paint a picture, take us on a journey! The more specific you are the better, as this will help the audience connect with you through the details within the story. If you’re vague, then the audience isn’t really going to connect with you.

    3. Give a shout-out to people who were supportive of your endeavor - they’ll feel part of the tribe and will be more likely to share and help with organic growth if you tell them that they were mentioned in your first episode!

  4. Talk about the release schedule

    1. In order to create momentum and a passionate fan base, your audience needs to know how often you’ll be publishing new episodes. Encourage them to subscribe on their favorite podcast platforms so that they can be immediately notified when a new episode becomes available!

    2. This is also important to keep you accountable and on schedule.

  5. Explain the podcast’s structure

    1. This is where you share how the show will be structured

      1. Explain the topics that you’ll be covering in the upcoming episodes, but don’t get into the nitty-gritty of what topic will be covered on which episode number, it’s just an overview.

      2. Will there be interviews? If so, explain which types of guests you’ll be inviting.

      3. If you welcome audience participation, explain how that is going to work, and which platforms people can use to be a part of the show.

  6. Say goodbye and share where people can find more:

    1. Website, social media, podcast platforms or mailing lists are the usual places to send your audience to.

    2. Extra tip in this section: only mention the platforms that you actively monitor.

Podcaster Introduction:

- Hi welcome to the Green A to Z!

I'm your host (Ana Xavier, a former journalist, turned podcast producer and lover of sustainable and green living! )

I’ve been passionate about (protecting the environment since I was a young girl. At age ten I started my own school group to pick up trash in my hometown once a month, and I was super into it. Now as an adult, I expanded my efforts to living a greener life, improving my household’s sustainability and endlessly convincing my husband to “try this new green hack that I saw on Pinterest” or that I read on a news article. (poor man… he really is a good sport)

Every time I talked to someone in my friends circle, I knew that they were interested in reducing their impact, but they keep telling me that they believed that in order to live green, you have to sacrifice comfort and time. It was during a really insightful conversation with my sister that I realized that sharing the journey and the little things that I did on the daily basis, would provide a realistic day-to-day overview of what it is like to let’s say, store food scraps for the compost bin, how I manage my compost bin or how I’m reducing my house’s carbon footprint.

I then decided to set myself a date, work on a list of potential ideas and guests… and a podcast name. So one month later, here I am, presenting to you my first podcast episode! I’m really excited to announce I’ll be releasing this podcast once a month, and I’ll be talking with other regular people, who just like me, will be sharing their experience of living sustainably in all aspects of their life. This podcast is aimed at improving the way we live, once action at a time and I’ll offer free resources of the website.

Now, if you like the sound of this, please subscribe to this podcast and follow the website greenatoz.com. Also follow @greenatoz on Instagram to let me know of your green efforts!

Thanks so much and I’ll see you on the next episode! Stay green!
